This course addresses language development and literacy for preschool and elementary children. Students will develop knowledge of language development and reading acquisition, and an awareness of the major components of reading such as phonics, vocabulary, children's background knowledge, fluency, comprehension strategies, and motivation, and how they are integrated in fluent reading. Students will examine literacy in the 21st Century, learn how to work with young readers and writers, explore ways to support reading and writing instruction, and practice procedures that can be used in PreK-6 classrooms. Prerequisite: EDU 104 with a C or better and ENG 101
